When Should I Get Engaged? Part X

Here it is - the last article in this series. In this article, I want to talk about something that I’ve touched upon a number of times on this site - prayer. Prayer is huge in a Christian relationship. God has designed prayer as a way of talking with Him - how awesome is that?! When thinking about getting engaged, you should be praying constantly for God’s guidance. This brings me to my final point:

Pray Without Ceasing For Guidance

Getting engaged is a big deal. It’s a decision that will be with you the rest of your life. Wouldn’t you feel a lot better about the decision if you had prayed about it? As Christians, we should be in prayer every single day. Paul talks about this when he says:

Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. - 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

I have touched upon praying with your boyfriend or girlfriend and definitely feel as if you need to be praying if you are going to get engaged. I know many Christian couples who don’t pray together because they pray very differently and feel it would simply hurt their relationship. Just because you pray differently doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t pray together! Not only do you need to pray about it yourself, you should to be praying with the following people:

  • Your Boyfriend or Girlfriend - This one should be pretty obvious, but it’s listed here because it is SO important. Do you both feel as if you should get engaged? Do you both feel that God wants you to spend the rest of your life together?

  • Your Parents - Pray with your parents about the situation. I talked about having the support of parents - this is a great way to see what they think. Ask them to pray for the two of you in deciding whether to get engaged or not.

  • Your Friends - Have a really close friend that you pray with on a regular basis? For most people, this would be an accountability partner, and that would definitely be a great person to pray with. Take time out of your day to pray with them - not only will you grow closer to God by praying, you’ll also grow closer to your friends!

  • Older Christians - These can be mentors or pastors. They provide great wisdom when evaluating when to get engaged. Typically, they have a ton of experience when it comes to evaluating your relationship. Pastors (especially older ones) have seen countless couples throughout their years and get a firsthand view of your relationship.

Prayer is such a huge part of getting engaged. I know that I prayed a lot before I got engaged and I encourage you to do the same!

That concludes the 10-part series on when you should get engaged. I hope that you enjoyed the series! If you want to see any other series, feel free to email me at livinforhim316@gmail.com.
